Scholarship Guidelines for Tuition Fees for National Preservation Institute Seminars

The National Preservation Institute (NPI) is the administering organization for scholarships for the National NAGPRA Program, National Park Service, Department of Interior.
NPI will accept EITHER an National NAGPRA Program Scholarship Application Form for Tuition Fees (www.npi.org/schol-NAGPRA.html) OR an NPI Registration Form (with payment information) (www.npi.org/register.html). All scholarship applications must be received at least six weeks prior to the seminar. Successful applicants will be notified four weeks prior to each seminar.
Multiple National NAGPRA Program scholarships are available for NPI seminars listed below. More information on each seminar, including a description and an agenda, can be found by clicking on the seminar title on the NPI web site.
Tribes, Native Hawaiian organizations, and museums may send up to two participants to any seminar(s) that they apply for. Each applicant must fill out a separate scholarship application.
Federally recognized tribes and Native Hawaiian organizations that DO NOT have a current NAGPRA Consultation/Documentation grant with dedicated training funds are eligible to receive scholarships to attend any of the following training seminars:
- Archaeological Curation and Collections Management
- Conflict Resolution and Consultation Tools for Cultural and Natural Resource Projects
- Conservation Strategies for Archaeologists
- Consultation and Protection of Native American Sacred Lands
- Identification and Management of Traditional Cultural Places
- NAGPRA and ARPA: Applications and Requirements
- NAGPRA: Databases, Summaries, Inventories, and Notices
- NAGPRA: Determining Cultural Affiliation
- NAGPRA: Writing and Managing a Successful Grant
- Native American Cultural Property Law
- Section 106: An Introduction
- Section 106: Agreement Documents
Museums with an annual operating budget of $250,000 or less are eligible to receive up to two scholarships for the following training seminars only:
- NAGPRA: Databases, Summaries, Inventories, and Notices
- NAGPRA: Determining Cultural Affiliation
- NAGPRA: Writing and Managing a Successful Grant
Eligibility Criteria
Scholarship recipients:
- Must be a tribal member, a member of a Native Hawaiian organization, and/or work at least part-time or volunteer on a regular basis with a Federally recognized tribe's NAGPRA or repatriation program to apply for any listed seminar.
- For NAGPRA: Databases, Summaries, Inventories, and Notices, NAGPRA: Determining Cultural Affiliation, and NAGPRA: Writing and Managing a Successful Grant seminars, applicants from museums with an annual operating budget of $250,000 or less also are eligible to apply.
- Must have a commitment to improving the stewardship of the cultural resources they represent.
- Must agree to attend the entire seminar(s).
- Must agree to provide own travel, lodging, per diem to attend the seminar(s) or have a provision for covering these expenses.
Review Process
Scholarship recipients will be selected based on the fulfillment of eligibility criteria. Notification of awards will be made four weeks prior to each seminar.
Travel Grants
The National NAGPRA Program is offering limited travel grants to those participants applying for scholarships to attend the NAGPRA: Writing and Managing a Successful Grant seminar on May 22-23, 2012, in Santa Fe, NM. To qualify for the travel grant, participants must work or volunteer for a Federally recognized tribe or Native Hawaiian organization’s NAGPRA and/or repatriation program, or for a museum with an operating budget of $250,000 or less.
For qualifying participants a check in the amount of $500 will be made out to the sponsoring organization after completion of the seminar; there are no exceptions to this payment schedule. An organization may receive only one $500 NAGPRA Travel Grant. The organization is responsible for reimbursing travel costs using these funds.
